This course introduces new as well as experienced board members to the most recent knowledge and introduction to competencies that are necessary in order to be able to hold board positions in financial institutions, mortgage lenders and others.

This course teaches the board’s considerations and decisions on important tasks and issues for financial companies. The course emphasizes the specificities of banks and mortgage lenders and the legal framework with research-based knowledge and experience from the boardrooms.

It is the ambition of this course to contribute to the development of the general level of competence in boards as well as managements.


The course consists of 5 days spread over a few months. The programme provides an overview of the board’s main tasks and issues, insight into the board’s role and interaction with owners, stakeholders and management, as well as concrete methods and tools. The objective of this course is that participants should be able to use knowledge and new competencies in board meetings or in the performance of the board’s tasks and responsibilities.

Emphasis is placed on the legal framework and societal conditions for the board’s work on value creation, strategy and risk management. Participants on this course will automatically become members of Alumni Finans and invited to 2-3 events annually.

Profile of Participants

This foundation course is for everyone whom work or aspire to work professionally as a board member within the industry. This course is also relevant for others within the industry such as CEO’s, managers whose work correlates with the board (chief auditors, chief risk officers, head of investments, officials, legal as well as other advisors).

This foundation course is pre-approved by Advokatsamfundet as a mandatory post-education for lawyers (53 lectures).

  • The management executive orders for the individual company types and the division of work between the board of directors and the executive board

  • Reporting and requirements for the compliance function

  • Principles of corporate governance and best practice board work


The teaching is facilitated by a faculty with a high level of competence and experience. Professors from Copenhagen Business School (CBS) and the University of Copenhagen (KU) teach in close cooperation with experienced board members and directors with background and experience from the financial sector as well as advisors from Kromann Reumert and EY. There is always a professor, a chairman of the board (or equivalent chief executive) and an advisor present simultaneously in the classroom.

The course is a combination of lectures, dialog, case discussions and reflections. The participants are expected to participate and actively engage in discussions. The participants will receive a certificate as proof of completion.
